CHERYL ALLEYNE - THE DRUMMER
From her early half-hour sessions at college whilst studying in the North East back
in 1984 with her Durham-based drum tutor Mr Roger Hempsall, one of the many
things which Cheryl learnt from him was that versatility would hold her in good
stead.
Her drumming is intuitive, sensitive and powerful, and she possesses an incredible
ear for music.
A consummate professional, she has covered many varied drumming styles and
situations.
 
CHERYL ALLEYNE - THE TUTOR
Cheryl possesses the patience necessary to ensure that her students receive and grasp
the information which she gives to them, finding various ways in which to do so
given that each individual will have different ways of processing information.
 
WORK EXPERIENCE - DRUMMING
 2014 - Received an invitation to give several lectures and rehearse
Post graduate small band students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Cheryl composed some music specifically for the band.
 2014 - Held the drum chair for the ‘Rudy’s Rare Records’ production
which starred comedian Lenny Henry both at the Birmingham Repertory
Theatre, and London’s Hackney Empire Theatre.
2014 - Held the drum chair and was also instrumental in bringing
together Courtney Pine’s all-female 10-piece band ‘The Venus Warriors’ which
performed at the Streatham Hideaway.
 2013 - Percussion tutor leading the drummers for the SERIOUS
London Jazz Festival Concert held at the South Bank which incorporated a 100-
piece brass band under a project by leading saxophonist Jason Yarde, called
‘BOLD AS BRASS’.
2013 - Lead drum classes at the Royal Festival Hall for young
musicians during the London Jazz Festival.
2011 - Performed at The Mermaid Theatre with the Courtney Pine Quartet
for the 50th Anniversary of B.B.C.’s ‘Desert Island Discs’.
2009 - Held the drum chair in the ‘Up Against The Wall’
production at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre.
2003 - Show band drummer on the Golden Princess Cruise
Liner.
2001 - Held the drum chair on the Renaissance Eight Cruise
Liner doing the South American run as show band drummer.
1997 - Drummer in all-female house band ‘Touch’ for 13 episodes of
Channel Five’s ‘Club Class Comedy’ with Richard Blackwood.
1993- October 1994 - Held the drum chair and toured world-wide
with rap/hip-hop group ‘Us3’ (Cantaloop).
1994 - Jammed with keyboardist extraordinaire, Mr Herbie Hancock while at
the Nice Jazz Festival during an ‘Us3’ tour.
Has also worked with and/or supported such musical luminaries as saxophonist
Wayne Shorter, Vocalists Marlena Shaw, Jean Carne, Percy Sledge, Billy Paul,
Sean Oliver, the late Jimmy Witherspoon and spoken word artist Jayne Cortez.
 
ADDED EXPERIENCE
Performed many times as a vocalist at the Vortex Jazz Bar in Dalston and
also in public.
2013, created a voice-over show reel with J.P.Orr’s ‘The Showreel’ after
having completed a short course.
Performed as an actor with the ‘Identity Acting Group’ and co-wrote for a
production called ‘Torn’ whilst on a two-month course at the Arcola Theatre in
Dalston.
 
CAREER LEVEL ACHIEVED
Cheryl Alleyne has been a professional drummer since 1987 after having graduated
from the College of Arts & Technology in Newcastle upon Tyne, and having
returned to London.
She has worked with international musicians both here and in the USA and has
also had her own working quartet for which she composed music.
 
She has led music workshops for musicians and drummers of mixed abilities and
taught in several primary schools again, both in the U.K. and in the U.S.A.
Past tasks have included inspiring and motivating young students to create and
produce their own compositions and to have fun whilst doing so.
 
Today, Cheryl Alleyne is a well-known and respected drummer and musician on the
London Music scene, and is also currently teaching drum kit classes at the Herts
Music Centre in St. Albans.

QUALIFICATIONS: Diploma Grade 1 First Class Pass with Distinction in
‘Light Music’ - 1984 - 1987
